Ric Oquita Ric Oquita studied at Junior Theatre from 1975 to 1979 and went on to Acting Conservatory programs at USC and Cornell. He has been a company member of the Milwaukee Repertory Theare, the Mixed Blood Theatre and Ping Chong and Company. Influenced by his collaborations with Ping Chong and ACT-UP, Ric began to develop a passion for “actorvism”, integrating his love for theatre and education with grassroots outreach and social action, collaborating with a diversity of community groups, academic institutions and social service organizations. This led to opportunities to write and perform original work as a solo artist and playwright. He began writing and performing solo pieces while living in Minneapolis, inspired by a community of supportive inter-disciplinary artists committed to nurturing and participating in one another’s projects. Ric continues supporting the work of other artists by hosting monthly salons in which artists across mediums can meet, exchange ideas and share resources. While living in NYC, Ric participated in salons hosted by JT Alum Wyn Wilson. After Wyn moved West, he continued to host salons in Brooklyn for several years and has carried on in Germany at gatherings known as “Ric’s Café.” Ric is a also passionate educator and worked as a Teaching Artist with various arts organizations in New York for 10 years. He developed arts-in-education literacy-based programs for Early Childhood grades with an organization in Manhattan called Making Books Sing. Ric has been living in Bielefeld, Germany since early 2006, collaborating with Theaterwerkstatt Bethel, a professional theatre serving the physically and mentally disabled. In 2007, Ric conceived and choreographed “Grün Kommt” for Theaterwerkstatt, a movement-based piece exploring the resonances and themes of waiting at traffic lights. In 2008, Ric will be performing at the Mixed Blood Theatre in the bi-lingual comedy ‘Waiting for the Hearse” and in Stadt Theater Bielefeld’s production of ‘Struwellpeter” (Shockheaded Peter). Also, his play “Echoes from the New World,” a commission by Teatro del Pueblo in St. Paul, will continue touring the Midwest. Visit Ric online at www.oquita.com or contact at ric@oquita.com
