All Balboa Park Campus classes are held in the Casa del Prado Building. Class specifics are subject to change without notice.There will be no class on November 11th, Tuesday prices have been adjusted accordingly. Registration is accepted through the first week of the session. However, we are strict about class size limits, and classes do fill. Please register early for best selection. Acting
Scene to Scene for ages 9-12 Register 

The focus of this class is scene study, and will teach acting students how to dissect a scene for character clues and beats. Students will learn to notate blocking in a script, and will rehearse scenes with other actors, learning to listen and react. Regular attendance is a must in this class. A prior acting class is recommended

Conservatory for GRADES 9th - 12th Register 

Audition for Conservatory!  SDJT’s Conservatory is an advanced program for high school performers. Admission is by audition/interview only. Conservatory students will workshop a new play or musical every session, directed by an SDJT professional, which will culminate in a black-box performance for the public. In addition to working on performance skills, Conservatory students will also have the opportunity to participate in special theatre-related workshops and attend field trips each session. This class meets both Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 – 8:30pm with additional hours required for tech week.  Auditions are Monday, August 25 from 6:00 – 8:00pm and call-backs are Wednesday, August 27 from 6:00 – 8:00pm.

Dramatic Adventures for ages 5-7 Register 

Students will spend the session exploring great characters and stories from around the world. Class members will recreate stories and get the chance to portray larger-than-life characters from stories that have been passed down through generations. Reading skills are not a requirement, just a great imagination and sense of adventure!

The Creative Process for ages 8-11 Register 

This is a good choice for students who are interested in all aspects of theatre arts. Both on-stage and backstage work is covered, including jobs in theatre, design basics for costumes, props/make-up, acting and directing techniques. Class will culminate with a short theatre piece designed and performed by the class.  This is a great first class at Junior Theatre, and introduction to being in a production as a cast or crew member.

Curtain Call for ages 5-7 Register 

It’s time for the Curtain Call! This new fall class will focus on acting skills and incorporate movement. This class promises to be a lot of fun for young actors. Students will put together an entire show for family’s and friends on the final day of class. Actors will learn performance skills through the use of stories, games, and activities.

Create a Character for ages 9-12 Register 

This class is the place to start for students who are serious about learning the craft of acting. Students will learn the basic building block of acting, creating a believable character. Actors will be challenged to use their skills to create a variety of characters that range in age, type, personality and background. Using their imagination and some research techniques, students will learn to come up with characters quickly.

Comedy Studio for ages 13-18 Register 

This class will incorporate comedic scripts focusing on comic timing, rhythm and pace.  Other subjects covered will be clowning and physical comedy as students study classical comic figures from Charlie Chaplin and The Three Stooges to Jim Carey and Mr. Bean.

Acting Styles for ages 12-18 Register 

Experienced actors will work with challenging material from Farce, Restoration, Realism and Absurdist. Techniques for acting in these styles will be explored while accessing emotional content and rehearsing scenes with like-minded actors. Due to the nature of this class, regular attendance is mandatory.  Some prior acting experience is suggested.

Acting Adventures for ages 5-7 Register 

Does your child enjoy making up stories with creative characters that travel around the world on amazing adventures? If so, then this class is for them. Students will create unique stories and use their imagination to act out new adventures throughout the session. They will put together an adventure to share as their play for family and friends during their Open Sharing. This new class will help young actors learn about the 5 Tools of the Actor and other stage basics.

AIT Aide in Training Program for ages 12-18 Register 

This 10 week training course is the first step towards applying for Junior Theatre’s Aide Program. Part 1 of the Aide-in-Training Program is a class that will focus on management and leadership skills necessary to become a successful aide at JT.  Part 2 of the program allows AIT’s to apply their new skills with a group of students during the school year or summer. Students will receive a certificate after the completion of both parts of the training. Students must attend all 10 class meetings.

Teledramatics for ages 8-11 Register 

The course guides students through the evolution of the storytelling medium from story circles to modern electronic theatre.  This is accomplished through units that end with project/presentations to a final class-generated piece.

Contemporary Scenes for ages 12-18 Register 

Great works by playwrights from the 20th century are featured in this class. Students will be assigned a variety of roles to play, and will develop at least one scene for performance on the last day of class. Due to the nature of a scene study class, consistent attendance is mandatory.  Some previous acting experience is recommended.

Let's Pretend for ages 6-8 Register 

This NEW fall class will help children explore theatre through imaginary play. Actors will be encouraged to let their imaginations run wild! Students will pretend to be various characters using inspiration from popular children’s stories, the world around them and their own imaginations. They will use their creative energy to put together a presentation for the final day of class. Children will love exploring characterization, plot and setting through theatre games and activities.

Theatre Games for ages 9-12 Register 

Based on the games developed for actors by Viola Spolin, this class will challenge students as performers and people. Theatre games help students enhance skills in voice, movement and in thinking on their feet. Besides all of the valuable benefits, theatre games are also a ton of fun.

Stage Make-Up Design: Cats for ages 11-18 Register 

Explore the world of stage make-up! Begin with the basics of stage make-up. Then venture into the exciting and more advanced world of make-up design for Cats, the musical. This class will be a pre-requisite for students who plan on serving as make-up crew for SDJT's fall production of Cats.

Intro to Acting for ages 8-10 Register 

Students in this developmental group are beginning to understand the relationship between actor and audience. This class will teach them the skills necessary for future success on stage. Basic theatre terminology, stage positions and ensemble techniques are taught in a fun, non-competitive setting.

Slapstick Me Silly for ages 10-13 Register 

This class is the choice for funny kids who love classic comedy. Seltzer bottles, cream pies and all the pratfalls of the vaudeville stage come alive in this fast-paced class. Juggling and tumbling are also covered. Students will rehearse authentic vaudeville sketches for performance on the last day of class.

Masters of Acting Technique for ages 12-18 Register 

In this class, experienced actors will learn from the masters of the acting tradition. From Stanislavski’s method, to techniques developed and taught by Uta Hagen, Sanford Meisner, Lee Strasberg, and Stella Adler, aspiring actors will complete the course with a firm ground for their future study. An excellent choice for students who are planning to major in theatre in college. Prerequisite: Some prior acting experience.

Comedy Station for ages 8-10 Register 

There will be lots of laughs at the Comedy Station each week. Students will learn new improvisational skills in a comedy sports style. This class is a wonderful opportunity to get actors on stage thinking on their feet. Family and friends will be invited to the Comedy Station on the final day of class. Be prepared for hilarious laughs!

Stage Basics: Peter Pan for ages 5-7 Register

This class is a great chance to focus on the nuts and bolts part of acting. Students will learn theatre terminology, stage directions, how to take down blocking, techniques for entrances and exits and other skills that combine the creative with the technical. Students will work on all these skills while putting together a short version of Peter Pan. This class is a wonderful preparation for being in a stage play.

Acting for 'Tweens for ages 9-12 Register

This can be a difficult time in theatre for students who are not quite kids and not-quite teens. The in-betweeners can use this time to enhance their acting skills, learn audition techniques that are specific to their age group, and work on scenes featuring characters that are at the same developmental stage that they are. This is an empowering class that will help actors in the “middle” take on their teen performing years with valuable skills and experience
