San Diego Junior Theatre Summer Camps, 2008

We now offer Three Extended Day Options for students before and after camp. Camps are held in the Casa del Prado Building in Balboa Park. Camp specifics are subject to change without notice.

Balboa Park : Creative Play Camp

This camp is specially designed for 4 and 5 year olds. In a week-long, half-day format, students will experience the magic of the arts through singing, movement, dramatic play and craft activities. We have a 1:10 ratio of teaching artists to students, in addition to a classroom aide. Families and friends are invited to attend a sharing performance on the last day of camp. Choose from a morning or afternoon session. Cost: $150.00 (No extended day available.)

Balboa Park : Traditional Camp

Students entering grades 1-12 have the opportunity to take four classes each day with San Diego’s best teaching artists! Acting, voice and dance are featured and specialty topics will change each week (they may include puppetry, mask-making, stage make-up, audition skills and more). At the end of camp, families and friends are invited to attend an open sharing performance. Class sizes are limited to 25. In addition to the teaching artist, each team has a high-school or college-age aide who has gone through Junior Theatre aide training. Cost: $175.00 to $325.00. (There will be no Camp on July 4)

Balboa Park : Traditional “Advanced Track” Camp

This is for students entering 4th through 12th grade who have participated in Junior Theatre camps/classes(or equivalent) for at least 2 years. These students will receive an accelerated program involving classes in music, dance, acting and specialty workshops daily. In these classes we assume students have received instruction in basic drama, music and dance skills. If you meet this pre-requisite, mark the “Advanced Track” box on the registration form. You will be notified by confirmation letter. Cost: $175 to $325 (There will be no Camp on July 4)

Balboa Park : Performance Camps

All productions, directors and detailed information for the following performance camps will be announced at the summer pre-audition meeting held on April 26th at 9am at the Casa del Prado Theatre in Balboa Park.

Sessions One Advanced Musical Theatre Les Miserables
Designed for advanced level performers, this camp will study one musical in depth and give a performance for campers and families at the end of the session. Advanced Musical Theatre is very challenging as the performers have less than two weeks to produce an entire musical! Camps are by audition only. You must register for Summer Camp and then make an appointment to audition. Auditions will be May 5th, 4-6pm or May 6th, 4pm-6pm, concurrent with Thorough Modern Millie auditions. Please prepare a one-minute song. You will need to bring the sheet music in your key to audition. There is a limit of 25 students for the camp. Students who are not selected for these camps will be automatically placed in the advanced track of Session 1 unless indicated otherwise at the time of registration. Cost: $325.00

Session Two Advanced Acting Camp Romeo and Juliet
This is a very challenging camp designed for students who are interested in intensive (and fun) training. Students will work on a play that will be performed at the end of the session. The Session Two AAC Camp is by audition only and is strictly (no exceptions) for students entering grades 9-and-up. You must register for Summer Camp and then make an appointment to audition. Auditions will be Saturday, May 10th at 1pm. Please prepare a one minute Shakespearean monologue. There is a limit of 25 students for this camp. Students who are not selected for this camp will be automatically placed in the advanced track of Session 2 unless indicated otherwise at the time of registration. Cost: $350.00.

Session Three Advanced Musical Theatre A Chorus Line
Designed for advanced level performers, this camp will study one musical in depth and give a performance for campers and families at the end of the session. Advanced Musical Theatre is very challenging as the performers have less than two weeks to produce an entire musical! Camps are by audition only. Session Four Play Production Camp Blue's Clues
This camp will rehearse the musical Blue's Clues for two weeks in the summer and then become our second production at The YMCA Firehouse in La Jolla. Rehearsals in Summer will be August 4-15 at Roosevelt Junior High School's Theatre. In early September, rehearsals will continue in at the YMCA Firehouse in La Jolla. Performances will be September 12-28. This camp is by audition only. Auditions will be 4-6pm on May 2, or 9am-12pm on May 3, 2008, concurrently with Really Rosie auditions. You must register for Summer Camp and then make an appointment to audition. Please prepare a one-minute song. You will need to bring the sheet music in your key to audition. This camp is for students in grades 3-12. Students who are not selected for this camp will be automatically placed in the advanced track of Session 4 unless indicated otherwise at the time of registration. Cost: $350.00

Additional information for all the Performance Camps
You must register for the Summer Performance Camp of your choice and then call 619-239-1311 to schedule an audition time. There is a limit of 25 students per performance camp. Students who are not selected for a performance camp will be automatically placed in the Advanced Track of that camp’s session, unless indicated otherwise at the time of registration.

Musical Theatre Dance Camps

Spend a week with us in beautiful Balboa Park exploring dance! Students who love musicals will love learning the style of dance associated with the stage. Jazz techniques meet Broadway music for a class that involves movement, dance, and acting. Students will learn numbers from hit musicals and explore a variety of styles of dance, including tap, jazz, ballet, hip-hop and modern. Fast paced and high energy, dancers will increase their skills by experiencing the important concepts in each style.

The first week is for dancers in grades 7-12 with at least two years prior experience in dance. The second week is for beginning to intermediate level dancers in grades 4-6. Cost: $175.00

Summer Master Class Series for Teens, Grades 9-12 Only

Spend your Saturdays with the pros! A new 5-week series designed for our advanced teens. Each Saturday, students will work with a professional actor or director on a variety of topics including such possible topics as audition technique, costume history, musical theatre audition workshop, classical text exploration, and the directing/ acting process. This workshop is for students who have completed 3 or more years of acting technique. Specific information on the individual workshops will be available in early June. Class size is limited to 20, enroll early. Workshop dates are 6/21, 6/28, 7/12, 7/19, 7/26. Cost: $150.00
