The History of San Diego Junior Theatre

Dear Friend of San Diego Junior Theatre:

For 60 years, JT has played different roles to different people. For some, JT has been the vehicle through which they have discovered their passion for the performing arts; for others, JT has served as an important place to learn and develop social skills; and for many of the young people who pass through these doors, JT is a haven away from the strain and pressure of the outside world.

This past season, all of San Diego County was affected by the October firestorm. Schools were closed, residents were evacuated, and homes ravaged by the catastrophe. In the midst of this uncertain time, San Diego Junior Theatre was a refuge for those students dealing with the stress of the wildfires. As one young evacuee put it, "When I got to JT, I was really sad and worried and stressed, but when I got here, everyone was so wonderful and concerned, and the show is so fun that I forgot about everything for awhile — I needed to come here."

These words, along with many other testimonies like it, affirm JT's place as an essential part of the San Diego community. Through calm and storm, whether personal or communal, San Diego Junior Theatre remains a safe space where young people "need to come."

For 60 years, our vision has remained unchanged: All children must have the opportunity to experience the performing arts and develop an appreciation that will stay with them for a lifetime. This vision includes the belief that all children deserve the opportunity to experience positive, unfailing support and community. We hope you will help us attain this goal.

In this, our 60th Anniversary year, we would like you to celebrate with us by making a donation or perhaps increasing your usual donation to celebrate our 60th Anniversary and ensuring that San Diego Junior Theatre can remain what it has been and continues to be for so many people: a place of not only education, but of community and kinship, too.
