Fifty-Nine Seasons! Longevity! Quality!

Here is a history lesson for you. In 1948 Craig Noel thought it would be a great idea to start a Junior Theatre Wing of the Old Globe Theatre. He took young people from the community and mixed them with Globe actors such as Victor Buono and Dennis Hopper to produce family entertainment. In 1948, things were quite different than they are today. San Diego had a population of about 330,000 people. World War II had just ended and the Navy returned Balboa Park to the City of San Diego. Also... a car cost $1,500, a gallon of gas was 26¢, and a house cost $13,500! Unfortunately, the annual salary was $3,600 and the minimum wage was 40¢ an hour.

In the news of 1948, Truman defeated Dewey, the army was racially integrated, the Frisbee was invented, McDonald’s was founded, Andrew Lloyd Webber was born and Scrabble was a new game. And for the first time Superman was in a movie. Television production began to rev-up. However, only one American in ten had even seen a television.

Since 1948, San Diego Junior Theatre has grown considerably, always providing quality theatre experiences for the youth of our community.
