Our 60th Anniversary Season of Shows 2007-2008

Junior Theatre Directors

Walter Allen Walter Allen recently moved to San Diego from the “Deep South,” specifically Northern Louisiana via Alabama. After graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre and a Master’s Degree in Education, Walter taught high school English for two years before moving on to teach theatre arts at Bumpus Middle School in Hoover, Alabama for the past three and a half years. There, he developed a small after-school program of 20 students into an energetic Junior Thespian Troupe involving approximately 100 of the 1200 Bumpus students. While teaching, Walter spent his summers as the artistic director for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Musical Theatre Academy for students age seven to eighteen. At both his middle school program and the academy, he directed and choreographed productions such as Once on this Island, How to Eat Like a Child and Land of the Dragon. In addition, he wrote and directed several children’s shows including Wonderland High, a modern high-school adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice stories. Walter also worked with his students in both programs to co-write several full length productions including Day of Awakening, an Egyptian fable with a Monty Python-esque twist. During the school year, Walter has also been an active participant in community and educational theatres from performances in A Chorus Line and Damn Yankees, to director and choreographer of shows such as Oliver! and No, No, Nanette. Currently, Walter teaches Video Production at Eastlake Middle School. Since his move to San Diego, Walter has worked with Junior Theatre on such productions as To Kill a Mockingbird, Peter Pan, and Grease.

Becky Cherlin Baird is a native San Diegan who is the founding Artistic Director of The J*Company, an award winning children’s theatre company, at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla, California. Becky is a graduate of the University of Arizona, Theatre Arts Program. She traveled the country with the Broadway National Tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as the casting and choir director for the Dreamcoat Choirs. She is an alumni of Junior Theatre, 1979-1989, receiving the Bank of America scholarship in 1989. Becky has directed and choreographed several original musicals for youth written by award winning playwrights from across the country including; Number the Stars (based on the book by Lois Lowry), Hello, Tomorrow and Benjamin and Judah. In her spare time, Becky records voice-overs, jingles, performs on stage and freelance directs and choreographs. Becky is known as the 'Pied Piper' of Children’s Theatre.
Cheryl Cline is currently in the Masters of Fine Arts in Music Theatre program at San Diego State University. Originally form Toronto, Canada, Cheryl earned an Honours Bachelor of Music degree (voice specialty) from the University of Western Ontario, and taught high school music for five years as well as performing and directing in the Toronto area. Since moving to San Diego, Cheryl has performed at SDSU in Flight of the Lawnchair Man (Gracie), In the Beginning (Lydia) and Zombie Prom and has been music director for American Rose’s Theatre’s Oklahoma! and Junior Theatre’s Charlotte’s Web and Winnie the Pooh. She is currently directing Velveteen Rabbit.
Jason Connors has been working in theatre for the last ten years, beginning at San Diego Junior Theatre and moving on to the Playwrights Project where his own original plays started being produced. Since then he has worked with the Fritz Theatre, Sledgehammer, Actors Alliance, The Blank Theatre (LA), Planned Parenthood's IMAGES Theatre, Grossmont Stagehouse, Voices of Women, the JCC, and now the wonderful 6@Penn Theatre.
Desha Crownover is the Artistic Director at San Diego Junior Theatre where she has served as general manager, director, musical director, and teaching artist for the past ten years, co-founding SDJT’s Conservatory Program for aspiring high school artists . Desha has had the opportunity to direct, teach, and perform in San Diego for the past fifteen years where her directing work has been commended by such theatre notables as Edward Albee, Ming Cho Lee, and Timothy Near. She holds a Master’s degree in Theatre from SDSU and a B.A. in Theatre with an emphasis in Performing from UCSD. She has served on the teaching faculty of SDSU, Cuyamaca College, and Santa Fe Christian Schools. Some of Desha’s favorite directing credits for JT include The Miracle Worker, Twelfth Night, Our Town, and Blood Wedding. Her work as a playwright has been produced at UCSD, SDSU, and Santa Fe Christian Schools, as well.

Bryant Hernandez has taught and mentored young actors and writers in San Diego, northern California, and on the east coast. Recently, he served as a teaching artist for George Street Playhouse in New Jersey, teaching at-risk students to develop their experiences into spoken words for performance. He has also directed their touring production, The Peacemaker, from their educational program that toured many elementary schools. Prior to working on the east coast, Bryant served as the education director for Playhouse Merced during their summer program, Young Artist Conservatory, teaching students from ages 6-16. Bryant is also Bilinguel in Spanish and English.As an actor, Bryant has been seen in: Dancing at Lughnasa (Michael), On-Stage Playhouse; Fuente Ovejuna (Mengo), 6th @ Penn Theatre; La Pastorela (Crespo the Sheep), The Old Globe Theatre. His directing credits: NYC: Tricks, Producers Club; Spider Monkeys, John Houseman Studio Theatre. Elsewhere: One Last Mass, 6th @ Penn Theatre; On the Corner of Art and Solita Street, Actors Festival/ The Lyceum Theatre; The Peacemaker, George Street Playhouse Education Tour; Deep Within Our Hearts, PPAC @ GSP; Leader of the Pack: The Ellie Greenwich Musical, San Diego Junior Theatre Black Box Performance; The Hobbit, Playhouse Merced; Just Around The Corner, APA Studios; Others: If Men Played Cards as Women Do, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Antigone, The Journey of the Skeletons, Line and She’s Leaving Home. He is currently an associate member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, inc.

Daniel Marshall Daniel Marshall began his dance career at the San Diego Creative School of Performaning Arts, from which he accepted a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre of New York. His tenure there was destined to be short-lived, as his talent was recognized by Ms. Cleo Parker Robinson, who tapped him to come to Denver to perform for her. Mr. Marshall spent the next four years refining and expanding his already accomplished performance repertoire while touring in Germany, Kenya, Poland and Russia. He returned to San Diego, accepting a position as Artistic Director of San Diego Contemporary Dance Ensemble. In 1999, Mr. Marshall's expanding talents were recognized by the Tommy Awards (Best Male Performer, Best Choreographer); shortly thereafter, he took a position as one of the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company's Star Performers. He has received significant acclaim for his work with the DCDC. In January 2001, he was named "One of the Top 25 Dancers to Watch" by Dance Magazine Following his stellar career as a performing dancer, Mr. Marshall's attention was drawn to the art of choreography and instruction. He has set ballets for the Gem City Ballet and South Dayton Ballet Companies, as well as the DCDC. In 2002, he received the National Choreography Award for his work. Mr. Marshall has recently returned to his native San Diego, where he is the founder and Artistic Director of LaDiego Dance Theater.
Patrick McBride Patrick’s directing credits include The Best Christmas Pageant Ever in Maui, The Good Doctor and A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Vista’s Moonlight Stage Productions, As Bees in Honey Drown and Moon Over Buffalo at North Coast Rep, Dream (2x), Hamlet (2x), and The Tempest (2x) for The Old Globe (Summer Shakespeare camps), and The Flimflam Man and Alice’s Wild Ride for the La Jolla Playhouse POP Tours. His favorite acting roles include the title role in Bullshot Crummond, Stanley in Brighton Beach Memoirs, Constable Chumley in the world premiere musical Robin Hood, and Touchstone in As You Like It at PCPA. Other plum roles include: Lucius O’Trigger in The Rivals, Moon in The Real Inspector Hound, Dr. Prentice in What the Butler Saw, and Alexander in The Destiny of Me. For Kid’s College, he has directed productions of The Phantom Tollbooth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Willi Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He will be appearing soon in the film The Obedient Son and performs every weekend doing improv at the National Comedy Theatre in Old Town. Patrick, a San Diego native, makes his living teaching drama, Shakespeare, and improv and is passionate about bringing exciting theatre to young audiences.
Tim McKnight is a professional musician and teacher in the San Diego area. He holds his Bachelor in Music Education and Masters in Vocal Accompanying and Coaching from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition to being the Director of Music at Chalice Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Escondido, he is also the accompanist and assistant choir director for the Helix Charter High School choral department, and teaches a studio of over 20 piano and voice students in the area. Tim is the Assistant Conductor and Principal Accompanist for the San Diego Choral Union, and is a part-time faculty member in the Theatre Department at San Diego State University. Tim has served as musical director, conductor, vocal coach and pianist for numerous musical theater productions throughout San Diego, including North Coast Repertory Theatre’s recent production of “No Way to Treat A Lady” and Starlight Theatre’s recent production of “Jesus Christ Superstar”.
Will Neblett has been Junior Theatre's Executive Director for the past seven years. In this capacity he has helped strengthen the organization, both financially and artistically. Previously, Will has successfully led Carlsbad Youth Theatre, both as a director and president of the board of trustees. Will has directed and musically directed many productions including And the World Goes ’Round (with Torrie Dunlap), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Annie, Annie Warbucks, Great Expectations, James and the Giant Peach, Oliver, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, The Witches, The Secret Garden (with Michael Anthony) and Nancy Drew, Girl Detective. Will has also sound designed many productions. Will's acting career includes many roles in collegiate and community productions; Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol (4 times), Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha, Senex in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Barnaby in Babes in Toyland and John Jasper in The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
Katie Rodda holds a Ph.D. in Dramatic Arts from University of California-Santa Barbara, and is on faculty at San Diego City College and California State University, San Marcos. Ms. Rodda has been directing around San Diego since 1999, her recent projects include: The Dining Room, The Boys Next Door, Viburnum, Damn Yankees, Side by Side by Sondheim, Bobby Gould in Hell, and The Flower of Dubuque, along with numerous original plays. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Fritz Theatre and Actors Alliance of San Diego, CA. This production marks her directorial debut with San Diego Junior Theatre.
Teri Weisenberg Ang Teri Ang is a JT alumni and is excited to be part of this year’s 6oth anniversary as the director for “How To Eat Fried Worms”. She has been involved in theatre since she was 8 years old starting at JT of course (when she was Teri Weisenberg). She has been a theatre arts teacher at Valencia Park Center for Academics, Drama and Dance, a San Diego City Schools performing arts magnet for the last 21 years. There she has directed countless youth theatre productions. She has also worked for many community theatres doing stage management, production and acting.
Robin Whitehouse is totally enthralled with his work as a Sound Designer and Musical Director, and many smaller things too, for Junior Theatre. He has also Sound Designed and operated shows at the San Diego Rep., Southwestern College, and the Old Globe. Robin is currently studying music theory and composition as a full-time student. Some of the JT shows he is most pleased to have designed to date include Zombie Prom, The Wiz, Aladdin Jr., The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe (for which he also orchestrated and composed music), Sideways Stories at Wayside School, Peter Pan, and Grease. JT is his favorite place to work, EVER.
